The Final Word on Election '08

I wanted to address Zoe's final comment because some of you may not have read about this in history.  Depends on how much you like to read the writings of our Founding Fathers.  She is quoting me...Here is her comment:

"When this country was first founded they attempted something like Obama wants.  It was determined in a settlement that all would share in the work in the community garden and then all would share equally in the harvest"

Um, I don't remember this part of history?  The US was a confederacy before it was a republic.  Our nation almost failed because we had too loose a government.

"They were familiar with the Federalist Papers, the Declaration and the Constitution along with other historical documents written by our founding fathers."

Surprise, I am too.  Also 50 years ago, there were the McCarthy hearings.  People take things to extremes all the time, on either side, and I think that is what is happening now.

My response:

Zoe,

The settlement I was referring to was Plymouth.  You can read about it in William Bradford's book "The Plymouth Plantation, Bardford's History of the Plymouth Settlement 1608 - 1650".  I am not surprised you don't remember this...most people haven't been taught an accurate account of our nation's history.  You can read the book, I highly recommend it.  Although I just mentioned a small part to you, here is a little larger synopsis on what happened at Plymouth:

An early American experiment with socialism

You've no doubt heard the well-known story of the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth, Massachusetts. But did you know that what you've heard is drastically inaccurate?

According to the writings of William Bradford, the colony's first governor, the hardships and near-starvation of the entire population occurred because the colonists turned their backs on capitalism. They believed the old lie that an economy based on the concept of "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs" can actually work. They instituted a socialist system, and found out that socialism causes disaster:

The harvest of 1623 was different. Suddenly, "instead of famine now God gave them plenty," Bradford wrote, "and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God." Thereafter, he wrote, "any general want or famine hath not been amongst them since to this day." In fact, in 1624, so much food was produced that the colonists were able to begin exporting corn. What happened?

After the poor harvest of 1622, writes Bradford, "they began to think how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop." They began to question their form of economic organization.

This had required that "all profits & benefits that are got by trade, working, fishing, or any other means" were to be placed in the common stock of the colony, and that, "all such persons as are of this colony, are to have their meat, drink, apparel, and all provisions out of the common stock." A person was to put into the common stock all he could, and take out only what he needed.

This "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" was an early form of socialism, and it is why the Pilgrims were starving. Bradford writes that "young men that are most able and fit for labor and service" complained about being forced to "spend their time and strength to work for other men's wives and children." Also, "the strong, or man of parts, had no more in division of victuals and clothes, than he that was weak." So the young and strong refused to work and the total amount of food produced was never adequate.

To rectify this situation, in 1623 Bradford abolished socialism. He gave each household a parcel of land and told them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit. In other words, he replaced socialism with a free market, and that was the end of famines.

If Obama wins, which it appears he will, I'd like to hear, in a couple of years, if you think he was good for this country and if you think your freedoms are still intact.....I'll certainly be surprised if you do.

Although I rest in the knowledge that whoever fills the role of President is there only by our Father's design...I still cry out and ask our Father to have mercy on our nation.  I invite you to do the same.

Blessings,

  1. I wish you had specifically mentioned the Plymouth settlement. America had many "utopian" communities that failed. I thought you meant America as a whole, as a colony.

    We have another president.

Let's get past our differences and work together to make this nation great again.

  2. I so agree...may HE have mercy on us!! I take comfort in those verses that say HE will deliver us if we ask HIM to!! Something no doubt, has to happen to draw more of HIS people back to their LAND...perhaps this is the beginning of that "something"...I wonder!!

I wonder if all the supporters of the winner are taking time to look into some of the changes in dress that will no doubt be required eventually...I just hope burkas won't be part of that. I am thinking already about the head covering issue..and pondering and praying for wisdom. Perhaps it will take a heathen king to force us to do what we should have been anyway...being modest that is...who knows...
    Blessings on you!!

  3. Hi Cheri,

Thanks for including this article: I knew you were speaking of Plymouth Plantation's first year, having heard about it from D. James Kennedy and by way of Rush Limbaugh. But then I couldn't find links about it by what I used in a search engine! I'm glad to hear the details again.

  5. Diane,
You're very welcome. It is amazing to me that we, both as a country and individually, don't look at history and take a lesson from it...just amazing. Think of the heartache we'd save! It's a wonderful story and even more so in Gov. Bradford's own words!
    Blessings,

  6. Vincent,
This is so absurd that I am not sure if you are joking! Obviously that would violate our Constitution, allow any country with an agenda to affect the future of our nation among a plethora of other problems.

I think America just needs to keep her nose out of other countries' business! Again, following the constitution...

It is amazing to me that we elect people who swear to uphold the Constitution, then they trample it to death, and then we elect them again....

    We deserve what we get!

    Cheri
