Why not? All the media push it. The lotteries tempt you with it....the American message is "you'll be _______ if you buy this!" (insert in the blank: prettier, sexier, happier, more successful or whatever tickles your fancy).
The answer? Read this excellent post by The Deliberate Agrarian....one of the best I've ever read concerning Christians and the current push for wealth by the "American church system" using the prosperity gospel.
